We are thrilled to be sponsoring the Row 2 Rio team as they head off on their Olympic inspired challenge.
Row 2 Rio is the brain child of four extreme athletes, Mel Parker, Susannah Cass, Jake Heath and Johnny Keevil. Inspired by the 2016 Olympic Games, their aim is to complete a never-done-before 7000 mile route starting in London and ending in Rio, using only human power.
This incredible physical feat will see them cycle from London to Lagos on the west coast of Portugal, where they’ll swap to their ocean adapted rowing boat and row approximately 1600 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to Belem in northern Brazil. Once back on dry land, their final cycle leg will begin as they journey down through South America before arriving in Rio in time for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
We have kitted the team out with the essential performance accessories for each phase of their journey. This will ensure they stay warm, dry and comfortable whilst ultimately helping them to achieve their goal of breaking two world records along the way.
On their first bike phase, they will be using the tried and tested lightweight, mid length waterproof Albatross sock, Dragon Eye waterproof gloves and the windproof skull cap to keep them protected in the expected northern European weather. When out on the water, the team will be in Sealskinz’s knee length, mid weight waterproof socks and hi-vis yellow, Ultra-Grip waterproof gloves and same colour beanie hat.
On the final leg in South America - and back on the bike - the weather will be warming up, therefore Sealskinz will be fitting them out in their new summer accessories. They’ll be using a combination of the ankle length, Road Aero sock and hi-vis oversocks for any showers they may run into, the new Madeleine Classic water repellent gloves and a waterproof cycle cap under their helmets. Every product will help them stay out for longer.
During their journey, the team will be relaying updates and stories home via social media, radio podcasts and blogs. The epic adventure has another important purpose – to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. We’re sure you’ll all join us in wishing them well as the journey progresses and the stories unfold.
