Phill’s been riding and racing on two wheels for nearly four decades. Schoolboy motor cross and BMX were early two wheeled passions growing up on the mid Wales and Shropshire border, and the two disciplines soon honed the skills to enter the world of mountain biking. A Raleigh Mustang was his first low geared steed that could climb the steep grassy hills of the Marche’s, and descend back down intact, or not so in many cases! An obsession was born.
Fast forward 20 years and his passion for getting out on two wheels is still as much of a thrill as his early teens.
Phill's been guiding and coaching riders of all abilities for over a decade in Wales, the wider UK and Europe. He's often found in Elan Valley guiding groups along the vast expanse and remote desert of mid Wales, and sharing the trails and spoils that many riders don’t know about.
His speciality is guiding groups along the epic Trans Cambrian; an off road excursion from the border of England to the Welsh coast. It is literally a journey through time, crossing the oldest mountain range in Europe through a diverse environment that is very wild and remote.
From a rider’s point of view, Phill's competed in endless marathons, painful enduro’s (the original Dyfi format) and a number of 24hr races. The experience of riding these events led him to push that bit harder, entering the 2007 Yak Attack in Nepal. This was the first edition of the stage race that has become a global success. Riders encountered just about every climate you can imagine during the seven days, jungle, alpine, arid desert and high mountain passes in deep snow. Add to this sleep deprivation and altitude sickness, but Phill says every pedal stroke and footstep was worth the effort.
Besides racing the event, he was commissioned to photograph the race for EWC, MBUK and Berghaus. This later led on to many freelance opportunities to photograph the downhill world and extreme events, and you can see this experience in the images he takes while guiding today.
A qualified Technical Mountain Bike Leader and Leader Trainer for CTC, and Skills Coach. He's also a Mountain Leader and paddler, so a broad spectrum of outdoor experience. A full team member of Aberdovey Search and Rescue Team covering South Snowdonia, this volunteering opportunity gives something back to an environment he loves and respects.
